The RoWeb LAN FAQ
What is a LAN Party ?

News imageQuite simple; We book a venue and provide a switched network including cables. You get to the event and bring along your PC, peripherals (headphones, speakers, CD writer :) and software (Games, games, games).

Whilst you are there you can either book a room at the nearby hotel (best booked in advance) or rough it out in a sleeping bag (an airbed is recommended!!).

During the event, asie from simply playing on the permanent game servers there are organised tournaments for the more popular games.

Also whilst you are there you can try out new software, see new hardware in action, chat about games, computers, software etc with like minded people. There's also the opportunity to see DVD and gameplay action on a big screen. For games that need tactics and strategy this is the only true way to find how that SOB keeps beating you! (you look over his shoulder :)

Our main ethos is to ensure everyone has a laugh and a good time. There's loads of activity in the sidelines such as trips to pubs, restaurants or local leisure activities.

What Games do we play?

Click here for the latest news This is always dependant on who comes along. But as the core attendee's are pretty regular with the following (or their newer look-alikes) and nearly always get a play:

  • Strategy - Starcraft, Age Of Empires 2, Total Anhillation, Red Alert 2...... we try to always have a strategy tourney!
  • FPS & Team play - Counter-Strike, Ghost Recon, TFC, Q3 Arena, UT, Allegiance, Tribes2 & anything else we can get our hands on
  • Space Sim - Alleigance.
  • Car Rally- Rally Master, Colin McRae2, Carmageddon.
  • Role Playing - Diablo 2, Baldur's Quest.
  • Console Games - Yup we have these too! You can usually find all consoles taking a turn on using the big screen. There's also a variety of new interfaces like Dance mats in use too
RoWeb Rules - Tournaments

RoWeb has its own tournament rules. The main principle is to ensure fairness and a level playing field. We are currently re-writing our rules to reflect this better, and building on our experiences with running LAN Party tournaments over the last 5 years or so.

For now you shuld expect official tournies to insist on minimum modification ofthe games default settings. Official Tournies are those with prizes, and any modification has to be agreed by all competitors.

More detail will be appearing here shortly.

What to bring to a LAN Party
A typical RoWeb Event

A suggested 'Kit List' is as follows:

  • PC - Your PC with a network card. If you do not have one you either buy your own or ask me to get one for you. You need a standard RJ45 networkcard (phone line type) running at either 10 Mbps or a 10/100 Mbps. If in doubt email me before you buy.

  • Headphones - you must bring these. Speakers must be turned down at the request of any other player and so the use of headsets ensures you get to hear the game/music ok

  • PC Games - Your game CD's. You may want to burn a copy to bring to the event rather than your original disks as a security precaution.

  • Your Windows/OS/driver disks - Sometimes you install that new hardware or software to take advantage of the local skilled people to help you out.. this sometimes neccesitates loading drivers from your windows CD.

  • Power link - Sufficient 4 way adapters for your own needs, one is usually sufficient. ONLY plug your 4 way adaptor into one of our adaptors (all red or marked with red tape).

  • Ablution gear - Change of clothes, Washing kit.

For those 'sleeping rough' - in addition to all above:

  • Camping mat or camp bed or use the car. We have found an inflatable air bed is the best bet.

  • Sleeping bag it can get cold at night!
Age Restrictions

Liability & Disclaimer

Although damage to personal equipment is very rare during these events, and injuries to individuals even, rarer you must read and accept the disclaimer below if you wish to attend:

  • Network Traffic Disclaimer: Under new legislation (think Napster!) the event organisers are liable for providing a means to transfer illegal data.  Illegal data includes all pirated software, pornographic images/software, and viruses.  At registration you will be expected to sign a form stating that you will not bring illegal software, or seek to transfer/copy any across our network.  This indemnifies RoWeb Online Ltd, and you will be solely responsible for your own actions should you chose to ignore this instruction.
  • Portable Appliance Testing certification (PATS).  Under UK Government Health & Safety 'Electricity at work' regulations, RoWeb Online Limited is responsible for ensuring all electrical equipment used at its events is safe to use.  This is to protect ALL people at the event from risk of injury caused by electrical appliances.   Certification is in 2 parts:

1 - Personal Checks You, as the owner of your equipment should ensure that all its components are in good working order and are safe to use before arriving at the event.   For further guidance on what to look for you should click here.  You will receive a form prior to the event which you should complete and bring with you.  This will greatly speed up your registration when you arrive at the event.

2 - Portable Appliance Test inspection We will be using a Portable Appliance tester at the event which will perform a small series of safety checks on your computer.  Should we find a safety risk you will have the option to either have it repaired or not participate - BUT we will provide every assistance in repairing your machine, and will bring many spare components to ensure any costs to you are minimal, if any.  You will receive a RoWeb PAT certificate at the event which you should retain as you will not require another PATS test at RoWeb events if you can produce one that matches your equipment.
