The Gathering LANParty Review (including Comedy captions)

Yes, once again, it is review time!

And this one certainly deserves a great review! We have been working hard to bring you this on and the gallery too! Of course, all captions are brought to you by Ze Skull, so send flames to him! Anyway, without further ado, over to Ze Jarra!

Roweb The Gathering Review - By Ze Jarra

Yet another late review, sorry to keep you all waiting.

One advantage of letting the dust settle before doing the review, was that it gave us a chance to soak in some of the responses from all attendees. On the whole, the event was a great success, and we wish to thank all those who gave us some valuable feedback on how to make the next one even better

Anyway, back to this event;
On the weekend of June 8th 2001, Swindon FC played host to our biggest event yet, with over 100 people in attendance.
The whole theme, called the Gathering, was lightly based around Highlander, though there wasn't a McLeod or a Kurgen in sight and most of the other immortals were just too busy to make it. We did however manage to acquire a replica of Connor Mcleod's katana which was to be THE PRIZE for the greatest all-round player in the coming tournaments. The idea was that the champion(s) of each game genre, Quake3 , Counterstrike (team of 5), Cossacks (team of 2) would compete head to head in a finale (Rally Masters) in order to determine the uber champion.

Many Thanks to Intel who kindly sponsored the prizes and brought loads and loads of network gear, servers and PC's! ! Click on the right to see prizes! ---->

No jeans, no trainers mate...

The site itself was well located, a minutes walk from 24 hour Tesco and a Burger King for those brave enough to venture across the Magic Roundabout. The venue was at the conference hall in Swindon FC, a large spacious room with an en-suite bar, need I say more!

We were amazed at the extent to which people would travel just to share a room with a bunch of sweaty, beer drenched gamers, but hey they still came. Ranging from Southampton all the way to Chesterfield, the call of the LAN stretched far and wide. Kinetic, still waiting for the engine to be invented in Wales, left a couple of days earlier so that he could guarantee arriving on time by horse and cart ;we got all sorts here!!!!
The London Krew as usual, comprising of Ze Clan, ULLA, Shotgun and this time Slaine & Dirt from UC_UK clan, were all huddled into a coach and force fed beer for the 2 hour trip ,poor guys.

The Arses Clan making complete [Authentic Roweb shifty eyes squad]'s of themselves...

The beauty of this LAN was that we had a large a clan attendance, most of which sported their own banners. We had the regulars: [ULLA] the dubious sour gang, the Terminator led [UC_UK] clan came in full force this time, [Ze] with new additions Pete Ze Hair & Cheesefather paraded the great Gingers one's face of dominance, and I am not talking about Shad, he was there to honour his [CIX] clan. From the ashes of Roweb Militia came the [ARSES] clan, led by our CS guru, Chief , and a few more new additions to Kappy's [SWB] team made a show as well.
However, besides the usual faces, we were pleased to meet so many new ones, in fact so many, that I know I am going to miss some out, so I apologise in advance if you have not been given a mention. Swindon locals, [DoA] look like up and coming regulars, and we'll be pleased to see more of them, as they seemed to gel well with the Roweb ambience. [Vets] clan, were also new to Roweb, these guys n gals are the best CS players I have seen, I still haven't worked out yet if they are souped up bots yet, maybe we should check their eating habits next time. Other clans included the ever popular [IX] clan and the [TW] young ones.

Vets Clan grabbing all of the prizes again...

Not only did we have a large clan turn -up but we also had some fellow Lan organizers who were obviously looking for a break.
Izz, DJ Arcas and Doc Fear of FlashLan (The chill n' chomp curry LAN), joined in the Roweb revelry, as well as Creature from ArenaLans, Putty_Thing and Ripper from the Big game.
And of course how could we forget the man with a 1000 vocal chords, Shotgun's Pete Ze Hair and his fellows, Kulgan and Mid_Gen (who borrows his T-Shirts from the Village People Foundation)

DJ and DocFear from FlashLAN enjoying their Cossacks prize...

The whole thing was driven by a dual Xeon III server running Counterstrike and Quake 3! Awesome!

Dave and Steve from PlanetLAN paid us a little visit and brought along a friend in disguise as a 42"screen, and I can assure you he was one of the main highlights of the event, with his gorgeous flathead and sexy resolution, he knew all the chat-up tricks and charmed the pants off all Rowebers.

Lurvely.... Slobber slobber... ;) Cheers to PlanetLAN boyz!

We were also pleased to welcome more females of the species to the LAN, the now regulars [UC_UK] uberChicks, Medusa (She can deal as much 0wnage as she can smile), Sofalou (LimpMisfit's CS mentor makes her appearance at last!) and then we had the [Vets] vixens, Stardust and Soley who could probably teach us all a few lessons on how to play CS like a man (er, that was meant to sound like a compliment by the way)

Shameless Intel pimpage! Intel were absolutely great as usual. But this time much more so!!!!

Read this: 10, yes TEN Pentium 4 1.7GHz PC's, the usual massive gigabit backbone (9 switches in total), a DUAL Intel P4 2GHz Xeon server, that ran 7 CS servers, 7 Quake 3 Servers, 2 Rally Master Servers and still ran quake 3 on top of that at 200fps... Crazy power! I tell you these people r0x0r!

Well, given our huge attendance as compared to previous Roweb events, a lot more organisation needed to be done. Crim, Ze Bounce, Baron and Shad arrived earlier in order to layout the tables and cable the area. A lot of work was done even before the first players arrived.
There were two main playing areas, separated in the middle by an "all man's land" which was full of Intel kit, for all to use and to serve as hosts for our numerous multi player games and of course our party animal regular, the Mr 42" plasma screen himself, which was kindly lent to us by our friends at PlanetLAN, Steve and Dave.. Baron has managed to capture all the important Intel bits in the little box next to this, if you care to read!

Anyway, back to the layout, we also had a mini cinema area, for those who wanted to grab a seat and watch DJ Arcas dance the hell out of Skyler at Dance-Dance revolution ,catch a film or watch Thumb Wars if anyone was lucky enough to see this absurdly funny pastiche of Star Wars.
Then of course at the far end of the room we were flanked by the bar and various tables for those to chill out with a fellow Roweber over pint or a bottle of Bacardi Breezer if your into chick drinks like myself and Pheo, ( I had my first Pineapple Breezer there, and i approve)

Toilets are not normally worth a mention but in this circumstance I will expand; I certainly think that Army could give us a perfect sketch of the U-bend in the 2nd toilet on the left, given that he spent half his Saturday evening there recycling the beer he just quaffed at the bar earlier on, still, he lived to tell the tale so that's fine.

Army was talking to Huey the great white telephone...

Swiftly moving on then, Roweb events are not just about drinking, we do also play some games as well. We had the usual games of CS going round, the Ze VS UC_UK 10 on 10 was a real laugh, especially the finale involving daggers only, it was like a battle scene out of Braveheart with both sides clashing, stabbing and poking each other; we really have to do that again. Strategy goons, DJ Arcas and Doc fear could be seen discussing 18th century field tactics whilst playing Cossacks, Phleb managed to muster a group of Worm fanatics for an intense game of point and click Worms World Party.

Rally Master Finals where watched on the big screen!

Raven was executed for killing fellow team mates in Starlancer, looks like we missed out on some funny action there. Rally Masters proved to be very popular at this LAN, involving many personalities all bent on mashing each others car, some players were just down right dirty namely Sgt Frag, Tek-9'ed, Deathwish and the Digital duo, they have a lot to learn from the likes of Kappy, Toastie and Ze Henry's cat when it comes to driving like a true gentleman, so lessons will commence at the next LAN!
I did also spot a couple of games of Tribes 2 in SquireMuldoon's corner but it wasn't played as much as expected, it might be an idea next time to get a 64 player game going, given that a LAN is the best place to do it.
Pockets of people were playing Age of Kings,Mech Warrior 4 and Serious Sam as well as other games no doubt, however the main crowd pullers were the games mentioned above.

Like all Saturdays at Roweb, this one was no different in terms of atmosphere. In the evening people were settling by the bar, clans were mingling (as well as the beer no doubt), BB guns were a'firing but most people probably feared Pete Ze Hair's elastic band propelling guns I think. Besides playing games and drinking a little, people were huddled around PC's watchng a DVD of some sort. I camped by Orcas' PC in order to catch one of my favourites, from Dusk til Dawn, that film always got me in the mood for Doom, unfortunately no-one is up for playing that game anymore, let me know if there's anyone out there who is, and I will be more than happy to pack a double barrel into their kidneys!

Although sleep is always a mere inconvenience at LAN parties, eventually we all succumb to that crusty eyed zombie feeling which can only be cured with sleep. Those who did not use their keyboards as pillows "a la Shad" style, resorted to either curling up in their maggot sacks under the tables or for the privileged few, slept a few more inches above ground in their air mattresses.

Sunday played host to the main tournament day, as usual the tourneys were a little rushed because people were just too relaxed to even think of competition. Despite trying out CrimsonHaze's new tourney software to iron out some of the admin, we were still running round like headless chickens making sure the final was going to happen. So the champions from each game genre, Cossacks (DJ Arcas & Doc Fear), Quake 3 (Smooth) and CS ([Vets]) all played head to head in a finale of Rally Masters which was eventually shown on the big screen as well.
Even though the final was over pretty quickly, the races were pretty exciting to watch and some of them were close. But there can be only one, and that proved to be Scope of [Vets] clan who managed to win the day and the Connor Mcleod Katana sword. 2nd prize, a full box copy of CDV's Sudden Strike went to [Vets] Cola. Looks like the [Vets] 0wned Roweb tourneys, however i am sure they will come against stiffer competition at the Terrorist LAN on the 27th of July. So [Vets] beware! (and watch out for your banner as well, could be up for grabs from the likes of [DoA]).

Flemming, the Intel master. Thank you Flemming!!!!!

After the Tourneys came the bit we all hate, the packing up, but then I suppose we are all used to it by now eh?

Luckily we had a little helping hand from the Swindon staff who were much better than us at picking things up from the floor and putting them into black bags, thanks guys.

Well this concludes the Gathering review and once again I concede that it is not the full picture as everyone had their own perspective of the event, but I hope I managed to capture the main points.

We would like to thank Intel staff, Flemming, Stinky Lizard Nose (You know who u r!), Pav, Mark "Demolition Man" Mutch and Ute and Anne (behind the scenes), for your sterling efforts as usual!
Our Roweb staff who put aside a lot of playing time to help others have a good time. We'd also like to welcome new staff members Creature (who's help at the last LAN was well appreciated); old roweb veterans, Army, Chief and Skack, who have always had positive commitment to the Roweb events
A big shout goes out to the usual Roweb hardcore who were there from the beginning, Phatt, Toastie, Doggers and whoever else I missed out.
Of course it was great to see people who have now become Roweb regulars like UC_UK clan & ULLA's Spey, Sherbot Lemon, Skyler and Body_Count, [SWB] and [CIX] clan.
Then we would also like to welcome new friends at Roweb like the [Vets] and [DoA] clan, I also include many individuals who were new to Roweb but I have not mentioned!

Please, spare a moment to think of our staff, who have been hideously deformed due to excessive LAN exposure.

Finally, I know there has been some question on the direction that Roweb is taking, are we sticking to our values by increasing attendance etc…?
Let me say this, Roweb events are ultimately powered by their attendees and their opinions, so given the overall positive response we had from the last event we are keeping the numbers on the same par, it's that simple.
I just realized that half this review is dedicated to thank-u's, next time we will send you all a post-card or something, then that should leave some room on the review for describing the event in more detail!
Well thanks for reading and if I don't see you at the next Roweb (you better have a bloody good reason :)) then I will see u at the insanely camp LAN that is know as SHOTGUN LAN! (Now there's Pimpage for you Pete, mine's a Bacardi Breezer!) And special thanks to Kulgan from ShotgunLAn for bringing the ace Linux driven dynamic DNS servers! If you where wondering why our network was so l33t!! ;-)
